There are several books that Mike Tupper Music suggests for various aspects of music. Here are links to some of them!
Arranging for the Concert Band by Frank EricksonI used this book in my wind-orchestration project at university. The book is illustrated with examples of Erickson's compositions for band. |
Instrumentation and Orchestration by Alfred BlatterI got this book when I was studying Orchestration at Huddersfield University, and found it to be an excellent reference work. It has a very approachable writing style, excellent examples and excercises, and good "quick glance" information diagrams on instrument range. |
Principles of Orchestration by Nicolai Rimsky-KorsakovA guide on orchestration from arguably the best orchestrator of the Romantic period. This edition contains both books of the original work in one volume. Book 2 contains the musical examples, which are referred to in Book 1. |
Treatise on Instrumentation by Berlioz and Richard StraussRichard Strauss translated Berlioz's original work, and added his own observations - an anthology of invaulable advice from two fine composers. |
Treatise on the Military Band by H. E. AdkinsThis excellent work contains a history of the development of the military band, a comprehensive section on arranging for the military band, and a section on conducting bands - including instructive how-to (and how-NOT-to) illustrations. This work is not widely available, but may be traced through your local library. |
The Cambridge Music GuideA very useful music reference text, used from the start of A-level music and throughout my music degree! A very good source of information on the various musical eras, illustrations, and listening notes appropriate to the subjects covered. |
The New Grove Dictionary of Music and MusiciansQuite simply this is the ultimate music reference work! (as reflected in the price). There is also a subscription scheme available for the online reference version at www.grovemusic.com. |
The Oxford Music CompanionAn excellent general reference tool, this heavyweight tome is an excellent starting point for music research. |
