Mike Tupper

Mike Tupper BMus(Hons)

Mike attended Harrogate Grammar School, where he started learning French Horn, tutored by Stephen Price. His first appearance as a soloist was in the Sixth Form Revue, and later he received a certificate of Distinction after performing in the Under-19 Brass Soloist class at the Harrogate Competetive Music Festival.

Mike was a member of many of the HGS Music department ensembles, including the Symphony Orchestra, Wind Orchestra, Wind Quintet, Brass Ensemble, Choral Society and Barbershop Quartet. He was in the Music group which toured SE Australia in 1997. Mike also played BBb Bass for the local Tewit Youth Band and the Yorkshire Evening Post band.

Mike Tupper took Music at the University of Huddersfield, specialising in performance (French Horn), receiving tuition from John Thornton. A keen member of the music department ensembles and other local groups, Mike built on his interest in transcription and arrangement, which he studied with Patric Standford.

While at University, Mike set up the Huddersfield University Student Concert Band, a volunter group open to all band musicians at the University of Huddersfield. The band raised money for Cancer Research UK through concerts given at St Paul's Hall, the university concert hall, and busking during the festive period. Notable concerts included "Around the World in Eighty Minutes (or thereabouts)" which included Martin Ellerby's "Paris Sketches", and the "Winter Warmer" concert with the Huddersfield University Student Concert Orchestra, which included a performance of Howard Blake's "The Snowman".

After completing his studies at Huddersfield, gaining a BMus(Hons) degree, Mike returned to Harrogate, where he became a member of Harrogate Symphony Orchestra. He also plays for the Band of the West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service. With assistance from the New Deal scheme, Mike set up Mike Tupper Music, a project he had been working on during his time at university. His first commission was from the National Centre for Early Music - arranging for the Minster Minstrels, a youth Early Music group in York.

As a freelance French Horn, Mike has appeared with the Huddersfield Philharmonic Orchestra, the Yorkshire Wind Orchestra, the White Rose Concert Band and Harrogate Philharmonic Orchestra.

Dean Wright

Born in 1963, Dean is a Licentiate of Royal Schools of Music (LRSM) studying privately under John Holland of the CBSO. He holds BA Hons and MSc degrees, and has been a teacher and head of Music in several state schools. He now works as an adminstrator in an independent school.
Dean played jazz around the semi pro scene somewhat, and worked as a professional musician. He spent 5 years with Nearly Dan (top notch Steely Dan tribute), and also performed with an original act 'The Skalinskis' for 5 years. He has occasionally performed with the Sussex Symphony Orchestra, and in theatre orchestras. Nowadays his performances are in church for mass, sometimes on natural trumpet. As well as playing trumpet, he sings every week in a church choir - mainly 16th century polyphonic massess and motets - Byrd, Palestrina etc, sung in their proper context
